Shopping for your first wig is an exciting experience, but at the same time, it can be a bit challenging. With so many options, how do you know where to start or which wig is the best for you? By the time you are finished reading this article, you should feel more comfortable and knowledgeable in selecting a wig(s) best suited for you and your lifestyle. Once you find your “comfort zone”, with wigs, they can truly be life-changing. Hopefully, my tips will help give you some guidance, as you embark on your luxury wig journey.

Whether you have decided to start wearing wigs for fun, protective hairstyling, are tired of spending hours in the salon, or have unfortunate medical complications, wearing a wig for the first few times can cause a variety of emotions. Your hair is a main feature that can truly boost your confidence. Knowing your hair looks great, makes you feel great. That being said if you are seeking a quality-crafted wig that will last for years, investing in a luxury wig and wig accessories is crucial. If you want to take the guessing game out of selecting the best wig for you, and of course you do. Choosing a wig designer or wig company that offers luxury custom wigs, known for having superior quality human hair, such as MUSE Beauty Bar, Inc. can help take some of your stresses away and make your first wig purchase a great experience.

I’m sure you have noticed you are most confident when you are comfortable. When selecting a wig, comfortability is one of the most important factors, if not the most important. You want to ensure you’re comfortable with your wig, from the size to the color and style, so you can wear your luxury accessory with confidence. Speaking of comfort, before we jump into the best luxury beginner wigs, let’s discuss what should be happening underneath your wig. Without a solid foundation underneath, your wig will not lay properly or look natural. You want to wear your wig confidently, you don’t want the wig to wear you. Although you may be a wig newbie, you can still slay a wig, so listen up!

If you are fortunate enough to have all of your natural hair, it should be styled properly underneath, to support your wig. Unless you’re wearing a wig with a lot of volume, like curly hair or big textured hair, which doesn’t require a sleek style, you want your natural hair to be very flat underneath your wig. Your hair should be braided, wrapped, or molded, so it is as flat as possible. A flat foundation will help anchor your wig so it looks and lays flat along the top. You want to avoid the “helmet head” look.

A key factor to help secure your wig, the unsung hero in the wig world; the humbling Wig Cap! I suggest a wig cap to all of my clients. Preferably a very sheer wig cap. MUSE Beauty Bar, Inc offers Ultra Sheer HD wig caps. Personally, I never wear a wig without a wig cap underneath. You can absolutely wear your wig without a cap underneath and have great results. However, do keep in mind, lace material directly against the skin can cause friction, which can become irritating and uncomfortable, after hours of wear. Not to mention, if frequently worn without a cap, may lead to thinning and balding in those friction areas.

When wearing a wig cap, you can wear it the standard way or there is a method called the “bald cap”. The bald cap method involves cutting the band off of the wig cap and “melting” the sheer fabric onto the skin using a lace adhesive, glue, or hairspray. If the cap isn’t the same color as your complexion, makeup is usually applied along the front of the cap. “The bald cap” method creates a seamless transition from the cap to the skin, creating a bald scalp appearance. It usually creates a very natural and flawless wig application.

A few things to consider when wearing a wig: can you see the wig cap line through the lace? Is your wig cap ultra sheer? Is your hair as flat as possible? As previously mentioned, you get the best results when you wear a wig cap that is very sheer and close to your complexion or even a shade darker. This helps your lace give the “illusion” of a real scalp. Your cap application will determine the overall look of your wig application, whether you decide to wear your wig glue-less or not. The foundation of your wig is vital.

I suggested an ultra sheer wig cap so you can’t see a line of demarcation through your lace. Wearing a cap in your complexion or slightly darker helps with that infamous camera flashback. You know exactly what I’m talking about. We have all seen, either in person or in pictures, the beautiful woman wearing a wig with the hairline shade too light, creating that “halo” effect around the hairline. Some of us have even been the beautiful woman with the “halo” hairline. I know I’m guilty! This usually happens for one or two reasons, the lace does not match your skin tone, and/or the wig cap is too light.

Applying a little powder or creme concealer, in your skin tone, on top and/or underneath the lace, will help blend the lace and give the appearance of scalp. If you use a wig cap your exact shade or a bit darker, make-up usually isn’t necessary. Using a thin cap gives a better blend ("melt") and makes for a better ‘bald cap” method, if necessary. All you need is a little lace adhesive spray or hairspray. You want to apply your wig cap just before your hairline, so none of your natural hair is exposed. Your wig should be applied slightly before your wig cap line or directly on top of the wig cap line, leaving none of the wig cap exposed.

If you’re considering wearing a wig on a daily basis or a few times a week, glue-less wigs are the best option to protect your hairline. I cannot stress enough, wigs should always be an alternative to wearing your natural, healthy hair. Wearing a wig should not be your only resolution, unless unfortunate medical reasons requires you to do so. If you need more security than the usual combs and/or straps that come designed with your luxury wig(s), I highly recommend you try a lace adhesive spray. MUSE Beauty Bar offers, FUSE™ Lace Adhesive Spray. It gives a super firm hold that can last up to a week and can simply be removed with water. There is no build-up or residue left on your skin or lace. If you insist on using glue for your wig applications, I don’t suggest wearing a wig daily.

Another major factor when wearing a wig, is the quality of the hair. If you’re looking for the most natural and healthiest hair, with the longest life span, human hair is the only option. Raw human hair is even better. For further elaboration on the different quality of human hair available on the market, check out my post, Raw Hair vs. Virgin Hair.  Human hair is easier to maintain than human hair “blend” or synthetic hair. Hair that isn’t 100% human hair, only looks good for a short period of time and requires more maintenance and styling to look natural, which can be overwhelming for a beginner. Synthetic wigs may be cheaper but when it comes to the wig game, you truly get what you pay for. You want your wig(s) to last and look as natural as possible when applied.

The quality of your lace will determine how natural your wig will look. Just like your wig cap, the thinner the lace, the better it will blend with your skin, giving a more realistic appearance. However, the thinner the lace, the more delicate it is. Ensure to be gentle when applying and taking off your wig to prevent damage to the lace. Also, the thinner the hairline is tweezed, the more natural the hairline looks. However, make sure your wig isn’t over-plucked/tweezed. Over-tweezing will eventually shorten the life span of your lace due to thinning and balding. I personally leave a fuller hairline when creating wigs for my clients, it allows the lace a longer life span before needing to replace the lace. Lace wigs naturally lose density over time due to styling & wearing. This is completely normal.

Although thin and somewhat delicate, when it comes to blending or “melting” lace, HD lace is the best-performing lace. It is currently the highest in demand and the priciest. HD is my personal favorite lace. My clients also love how natural HD lace looks against their skin, it’s practically undetectable when worn correctly. I use HD lace on all of the wigs I design unless a client prefers a different type of lace. Be mindful to use a delicate hand when maintaining your HD lace, to avoid ripping or tearing. There is nothing worse than hearing the sound of your luxury lace rip! Remember, it is literally just a piece of lace.

HD lace is not the only high-performing lace that provides a natural look. Transparent lace is another popular lace that works well too. It may require a little more manipulation and skill to look as natural as HD lace, especially on darker skin, but the final results can look just as good.

Take it from someone with many years of wig experience. If you’re a wig newbie, you should start with the easiest and simplest type of wig. Start with a low-maintenance, high-quality wig. There are generally three types of wigs; full lace wigs, frontal wigs, and closure wigs. Full lace wigs are not for the inexperienced, I suggest avoiding full lace wigs, in the beginning, unless you plan on having a stylist do your installs and the full-time maintenance, that comes with full lace wigs.

If you’re up for the challenge, give it a try. Do keep in mind, full lace can be very difficult to maintain for a beginner. Frontal wigs and closure wigs are less maintenance. Closure wigs are the most beginner friendly. Once you’ve become accustomed and comfortable with wearing wigs, you definitely should revisit frontal and full lace wigs. The styling options are endless! Do not fret though, you can still achieve some stunning looks with closure wigs.

Closures & Frontals

When you’re selecting your first wig, knowing the difference between a closure wig and a frontal wig is imperative. Frontal wigs require more maintenance. I suggest steering clear of a frontal wig as your very first wig, for the same reasons you would a full lace wig. A frontal is a strip of lace that extends across the forehead, from ear to ear, usually measuring 13” across and extending back 4” to 6”. The larger the frontal, the more space you have for parting and styling options.
The greatest benefit to wearing a frontal wig is the styling options.

Since the lace material gives the illusion of a scalp, along your entire hairline, you can style it almost any way you desire. Frontals are usually a favorite amongst most wig lovers. Although, when you’re just starting to wear wigs, maintaining a frontal wig without any prior lace experience can be challenging. I would recommend starting with a closure wig. When you become comfortable maintaining a closure wig then you should try a frontal wig.

A closure is similar to a frontal, except it provides less lace. Instead of the 13” strip of lace, along the entire hairline, closures are made in sizes 4x4”, 5x5”, 6x6”, and 7x7”, and more sizes. 4x4” and 5x5” closures seem to be the most popular sizes, especially for beginners. The size of the closure determines how much styling/parting space your wig will offer. Unlike frontals, closures have limitations with styling. Unfortunately, you cannot create half-up & half-down looks or complete updos, with a closure wig.

Don’t let the limited styling options discourage you from wearing closure wigs. You can wear gorgeous side parts, even deep side parting and middle part styles with a closure wig. You can also wear bangs, which is the ideal style for beginners because you don’t have to worry about any exposed lace. You can put on a bang wig and take it off in a matter of seconds. Similar to the way you toss on a baseball cap, which makes the bang wig a popular favorite amongst beginners. Closure wigs are great because they are low maintenance and perfect for everyday wear because they can be easily removed on a daily basis.

Selecting a style best suited for you and your lifestyle should be a priority. You don’t want to choose a wig with a difficult style for you to maintain on a daily basis. For example, half up & half down styles, updos, and styles with lots of “baby hairs”, more than likely will present a challenge for a first-time wig.

You should choose a style that exposes less lace. This is why it was suggested earlier, that frontal wigs and full lace wigs be avoided for your very first wig. The choice is really your personal preference, but since we are discussing the best luxury wigs for beginners, closure wigs are the most beginner friendly. Start with a 4x4 or 5x5, and once you get the hang of it, you can step into larger size closures like 6x6” and 7x7”, frontal wigs, and even full lace wigs.
